ABOUT THE ACADEMY

WHAT IS THE BUFFALO ACADEMY OF SCHOLARS?

The Buffalo Academy of Scholars (“The Academy”) is a private high school that allows students to customize their educational experience while meeting the standards of the New York State Education Department.

WHAT GRADE LEVELS DO YOU OFFER?

We are primarily a high school servicing grades 9-12 (ages 14+) but we can accommodate younger students (ages 11-14) who perform at higher levels. We can also accommodate older students who learn at lower levels (grades 5-8). We make all admissions decisions on a case-by-case basis, so please ask about your specific circumstances.

WHICH STUDENTS ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR THE BUFFALO ACADEMY OF SCHOLARS?

The best candidates for the Buffalo Academy of Scholars are any students for whom a conventional high school setting (public or private) doesn’t seem to work. Students come to us because they dislike large class sizes, because they have strengths or weaknesses that other schools can’t accommodate, or because they have passions that are difficult to pursue elsewhere. Some of our students come to alleviate their social or academic anxiety, and others come because they have over- or under-developed skills in certain subjects. Some students come because they have missed school – or they plan to miss school – for health, family, or travel reasons. If you have a need that conventional schools can’t accommodate, then you’re a good candidate for the Buffalo Academy of Scholars.

WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF CUSTOMIZATION?

Students can choose their teachers and classmates to ensure compatibility. Many students choose to take classes one-on-one so that they can learn at their optimal pace. Other students take classes two-on-one so that they can discuss novels, conduct labs, or debate social topics with a peer. In some cases, students plan to truncate or extend their school day or their academic year to accommodate extracurricular activities like sports, hobbies, or travel. The possibilities for customization are limitless, and at The Buffalo Academy of Scholars, each student and parent can exercise the educational freedom they’ve always wanted.

DO YOU FOLLOW COMMON CORE STANDARDS?

Yes. By default, all courses follow the New York State Common Core standards, unless the parent(s) and student agree to follow another curriculum.

DO YOU OFFER REGENTS EXAMS?

By default, we teach at the same pace required for students to be successful on Regents Exams, but we do not offer any Regents Exams at our school. Students who are interested in sitting for a Regents Exam do so at another school close to their home.

DO YOU OFFER AP COURSES?

Yes. Please inquire about the specific AP course offerings, as these change frequently with student needs. We do not, however, administer the AP Exams at our school; students who take an AP course with us must sit for the exam at another school close to their home.

WHAT EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES DO YOU OFFER?

The Buffalo Academy of Scholars offers student clubs and activities per student interest. We have offered (or currently offer) art club, cake club, computer science club, movie club, music club, reasoning club, science club, and many more.

DO YOU OFFER SUMMER CLASSES?

Yes. We offer classes year-round, with the exception of major holidays. Please see our Academic Calendar for our holiday and break schedule.

HOW MUCH IS TUITION FOR THE BUFFALO ACADEMY OF SCHOLARS?

Standard tuition for one year, including all textbooks, subscriptions, materials, activities, field trips, and other fees, is a total of $25,000. There are no additional costs to attend. Most students receive a small amount of need – or merit–based tuition assistance, decided on a case-by-case basis.

WHAT ARE THE APPLICATION DEADLINES?

We offer rolling admissions, so you may submit an application at any time. It is very common for students to join us in the middle of the academic year; in fact, we specialize in accommodating students who encounter unexpected or untimely transitions.
