Writing is a fundamental component of each class and is integrated into the students’ daily work. In addition to this work, all students participate in Argumentative Writing. The class consists of two components: writing arguments and debating. The class is intended to equip the students with the ability to demonstrate the following in writing:
- Identify reliable information sources from unreliable sources
- Understand how author bias influences an article or study content
- Learn how to summarize source information and identify important from unimportant content
- Learn how to brainstorm, draft, and edit work using non-fiction resources
- Synthesize multiple perspectives and present conflicting perspectives
- Compose a well develop argument that illustrates the above
In addition, the students will demonstrate the following in debate:
- Identify attributes of successful from unsuccessful debates
- Argue a perspective while supporting it with well-researched facts
- Learn to respectfully listen to a perspective that is different from the one being presented
- Provide objective counterarguments
- Remain professional and non-argumentative while debating
