In-School Homework

Call a truce in the homework battle

We’ve taken the “home” out of homework and put the “work” back into the school—where it should be.

Daily, students complete up to three 50-minute Applied Learning classes that typically follow a period of one-on-one instruction. The class is comprised of a teacher and a small group of students, all of whom are working on the day’s assignments or teacher-designed tasks. The students are expected to work on their assignments independently to demonstrate mastery of the subject they have just learned.

The Academy Buffalo teachers supervise Applied Learning sessions with the students to answer questions and help them manage their time effectively, building critical study skills. The result… less frustration on the part of both our students and their parents and improved accuracy of written work. Families enjoy stress-free, homework-free evenings and more quality time together at home.

Students are expected to read a minimum of 30 minutes daily outside of class. Each student receives the Common Core Reading lists for grades up through 11 and is expected to read a variety of challenging texts both non fiction and fiction genres. In an effort to expose students to language beyond their independent reading level, we encourage students to establish Audible accounts for listening to recommended texts outside of school. In this way, students develop an understanding of the characteristics of more sophisticated texts, become acquainted with classic literature and cultivate improved listening comprehensive skills.

What Parents Say

“The quality of our family time with Alex has increased and our stress level has decreased. Alex’s stress level has decreased dramatically. Doing homework in school makes Alex is learning to work independently and if he does need help the help is right there – it is so great not having to send the work back asking him to be re-taught then having double the work. We have no more “nagging” about getting his homework out. Just having to read everyday something he enjoys has been a ‘gift’ to us all.” – a Buffalo Academy of Scholars parent
